Geography
More so than any other city in the area, Norfolk has a large number of unique, diverse neighborhoods, more than 100, that are full of character and history. A few such neighborhoods are Berkley, Willoughby Spit, Ocean View, and Ghent. A variety of home styles can be found here, including start homes, loft apartments, townhouses, condominiums, and large waterfront estates. Bordered by the Elizabeth River to the west, and the Chesapeake Bay to the north, Norfolk has a large amount of both riverfront and bayfront property. By land, Norfolk shares a border with two other independent cities of the greater Hampton Roads area - Chesapeake and Virginia Beach.
Economy
Norfolk is closely connected commercially to its neighbors. Because of its location on the largest natural harbor on the eastern coast of the United States, Norfolk now houses the world's largest naval base, and also holds the defense headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The area's economy has been distinctively shaped by the many large bodies of water surrounding many of the cities in it. The bays and rivers around Norfolk have a network of deep channels that are maintained and which allow the area to function as a major trade artery through which extensive importing and exporting is done from the Midwestern and MidAtlantic regions of the United States as well as from international sectors. Alongside shipping, another large business in Norfolk is that of shipbuilding and ship
repair. Private shipyards located in the area include Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, and Colonna's Shipyard Inc. The largest industry of the area after the military bases are the cargo ports. The Virginia Port Authority is headquartered in Norfolk and operates three port facilities in the area, one of which is in Norfolk.
History and Culture
Norfolk began to be noticeably governed and settled in 1619 and was later established as a city in 1682. By 1775 Norfolk had become one of the most prosperous cities in Virginia. In 1776 much of the city was destroyed by cannonfire, and during an agrarian recession in the early nineteenth century many residents of the area moved out west. In May 1862 the mayor of Norfolk surrendered the city to Union forces. With the coming of modern naval history and the increase of the military in the twentieth century Norfolk's strategic position on a natural harbor caused its fortunes to rise with those of the military and it was a thriving city throughout the twentieth century. Near the turn of the twenty-first century the city government took extensive measures to initiate renewal and revive old neighborhoods and historical areas of the city.
Historical places in Norfolk include Chrysler Hall, Chrysler Museum of Art, the Douglas MacArthur Memorial, and Nauticus, the National Maritime Center. Norfolk is also home to the Virginia Opera, the Virginia Stage Company, and the Virginia Symphony.
The Seven Cities of Hampton Roads
